Loosely based on The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, nWave's The Little Prince 3D is an animated film that follows the titular character on a somewhat disjointed and mostly forgettable journey. With almost none of the charm of the book, this digital short utilizes computer-generated animation, telling the adventure of the Prince in search of his beloved rose.

Basically a visual experience directed toward kids, the film follows the Prince and his talking fox as they journey to different planets. The animation is moderate at best, although one sequence of a creature emerging from a rocky landscape is particularly intriguing. 3D is a nice touch in the sense that this film is purely an exercise in visual imagery, devoid of compelling storytelling or original characterization.

The bulk of the film presents a dreamscape of planets and environments. Story and visuals contain no real connective thread, the film plods on with non-sequitur depictions of floating sheep and singing divas -- I know, what? In any case, as a digital short, The Little Prince 3D could possibly work well with young tots, and perhaps parents looking to distract their offspring with 20 or so minutes of adequate animation.

It is impossible not to compare this film with the book of the same title. Where the book invoked a spirit of nostalgia and innocence, the film carries none of these qualities. Instead, it is a simple-minded film -- not even humorous -- with only the shared title and not much else reminiscent of the book's universal appeal.
