After raising $3200 in 7 days on Indiegogo.com, the first footage from Outside In will debut on the giant screen at GSCA Expo 2010
Greensboro, NC, USA. -- Outside In, the "IMAX in a basement" art film about space exploration, continues to overcome obstacles and blaze new ground in giant screen filmmaking. After successful showings of simple test/concept footage at previous GSCA (Giant Screen Cinema Expo) events, this year marks a milestone with the presentation of the world's first full IMAX resolution fly-through of real space images created using only real photographs. Solo filmmaker Stephen van Vuuren overcame enormous technical challenges to render the first work-in-progress footage that matches his vision for the film. And online fans of the film raised over $3200 in 7 days via Indiegogo.com to send this new footage to the GSCA event.
Despite working on the not-for-profit film in a basement filled with hand-built computers and funded solely by donations from individuals, Stephen van Vuuren's passion for Outside In has allowed the film to blaze trails in giant screen filmmaking. This new footage has been created with each frame at 24 megapixels in 32-bit color, exceeding digital motion-picture technology and beyond the limits of current optical film printing technology. With source images in the film exceeding over 100 megapixels, Stephen van Vuuren had to work directly with software companies to finally allow his techniques to be applied at these resolutions. Each uncompressed frame of the 24 frame-per-second film takes up 1 gigabyte and the final 40 minutes film will require almost 60 terabytes of storage.
But the technology is simply a tool to bring the vision that Stephen van Vuuren has had since 2006 of taking audiences on a mind-blowing giant screen journey. Outside In is a film that defies explanation. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and Carl Sagan's "Cosmos", Outside In flies the audience from the explosion of the Big Bang through all of human history and exploration of our Universe climaxing at the Cassini Mission to Saturn. The film then returns home to a breathtaking vision of Earth and concludes with the T.S. Eliot quote "We shall not cease from exploration, and at the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."
With the delays and technical obstacles conquered, Stephen van Vuuren is now focused on the huge task of completing the film, a challenge he relishes. The audience reactions to this new footage in just low-resolution clips have been humbling and inspiring. Some viewers were moved to tears by the incredible beauty of Saturn, highlighted in this first footage. When audiences have the opportunity to experience these images on the giant screen, the experience will be exponentially more powerful.
