The DVD release of Sky High Entertainment's Vikings: Journey to New Worlds extensively explores the world of Vikings ready for your home theater.
Originally shown in IMAX and other Giant Screen theaters, the Vikings DVD received a high definition transfer in widescreen anamorphic format. Though most IMAX DVDs are released in the traditional 4x3 full-frame format, the choice to go widescreen on Vikings does produce a more epic experience for home theaters. The high-def transfer also allows for a crisp, flawless version of the film. Naturally though, much of the IMAX scope is lost in DVD, but Vikings works well as an educational documentary. The film offers a very thorough examination of the history of Vikings from their origins, to their domination, and eventual decline.
A mix of re-enactments and digital images comprise the bulk of the film. Early on, the film debunks Viking misconceptions, and proceeds to portray a more accurate depiction of the Northmen, from their sea-faring equipment to their lengthy travels. As expected, violence plagues Viking history. They managed to conquer most of Europe, even warring as far as Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire. Much of Viking warfare, however, is implied rather than shown, using sound rather than imagery to evoke battle. Typical IMAX images -- like the lingering shots of Icelandic grasslands and waterfalls -- don't work as well for the home theater. Rather, they only offer a hint at grandeur of some far off place.
Vikings is a purely educational film. As such, interest in the film depends upon interest in the subject matter. Vikings covers a considerable amount of Viking culture in its study, which is sure to provide interesting insights for any viewer. The wide array of subject matter -- from Viking longships to their religion -- is each presented in a practical and enlightening manner. Schools and those with previous interest in Viking lore will find the DVD a valuable educational tool, but casual viewers will probably not need a repeat viewing.
The audio mix features Dolby 5.1 in English, French and Spanish, as well as an additional English DTS mix. The narration comes off as clear with a good balance between music and effects. The DVD also comes with a Making Of featurette as well as the theatrical trailer.
